A Homeless Shelter in Tulsa Built Around What Comes Next

Love & Rescue Independent Living is a homeless shelter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for people who need somewhere to sleep and help getting back on their feet. We offer three services: bed space, counseling, and life skills. A bed handles tonight. The other two are there for the weeks and months after, when the work of building a stable life actually happens.

Why Independent Living Is in the Name

Work

Plenty of people who lose housing were working, paying bills, and managing fine until one thing went wrong. A job ended. A lease was not renewed. A relationship fell apart, or a medical bill wiped out savings. Sometimes several of those landed at once.

Question

A shelter bed answers the most urgent question, which is where to sleep. It does not answer the next ones. How do you get back into a place of your own? How do you keep it once you have it? What do you do with everything that happened on the way here?

Home

That is the reason our name ends with independent living. The aim is not a permanent stay. The aim is to help each person reach the point where they no longer need a shelter.

Bed Space

Bed Space

When you have nowhere to go, the first thing you need to know is whether a bed is open. Our bed space page covers how to ask for one and what to expect when you do. A phone call is the fastest way to find out where things stand.

A bed is more than a mattress. It gives a person a fixed point in the day. With a place to come back to each night, it becomes possible to keep an appointment, show up for a shift, or simply rest long enough to think clearly. Very little else moves forward until that piece is in place.

Counseling

Losing a home tends to bring other things with it: stress, grief, shame, strained family ties, or the exhaustion of months spent just getting through each day. Those do not disappear when someone gets a bed, and they can make every other step harder.

Counseling at Love and Rescue gives people a place to talk through what they are carrying. Sometimes that means sorting out what led to this point. Sometimes it means working out which problem to tackle first. Either way, nobody has to figure it out alone.

Life Skills

Running a household takes a set of skills that many adults were never taught, or that slipped during a hard stretch. Knowing them is often the difference between getting housing and keeping it.

Rent comes due on the same day every month. Bills arrive whether or not anyone is ready for them. A landlord expects certain things, and so does an employer. Getting comfortable with those routines before moving out makes the move far more likely to last.

Our life skills work focuses on the practical side of living on your own, covering the everyday responsibilities that come with a place of your own. The life skills page has the details.

Services

How the Three Work Together

Each service stands on its own, but they are strongest side by side. Bed space gives someone the stability to show up. Counseling helps them deal with what is weighing on them. Life skills prepare them for the responsibilities waiting on the other side of a lease.

Think of it as a path rather than a single stop. A person might arrive needing only a place to sleep and, over time, find that the other two matter just as much. Others call because they want help with one piece in particular. Either is a reasonable place to start.
